Contractor Licensing in Iowa

Who issues the licence, what they cover, and what to ask. We do not reprint Iowa's requirements here โ€” they change, and the board is the only source worth trusting.

Ask Iowa exactly these

Write down the answers with the date and the name of whoever gave them.

  • Does my specific trade require a state licence, or is it handled by my city or county?
  • Which licence class covers the work I actually do, and what is the dollar threshold below which no licence is needed?
  • How many hours or years of documented experience are required, and what counts as qualifying experience?
  • Which exams must I pass, who administers them, and what is the current reference code edition?
  • What bond and insurance amounts must be filed before the licence issues?
  • Does the state recognise a licence from another state through reciprocity, and from which states?
  • What are the continuing-education hours and the renewal cycle?
  • If I hire employees or subcontractors, does that change my licence class or my workers compensation obligation?

What catches contractors out

The state licence is rarely the only one

A state contractor licence does not replace a city or county licence, a business registration, or a permit. Many jurisdictions require their own registration on top, and the local rule is often the stricter one.

Thresholds decide whether you need a licence at all

Most states set a project-value threshold below which unlicensed work is legal. That number is the single most important thing to confirm, because crossing it unlicensed can void your right to be paid for the job.

Unlicensed work can be unenforceable

In several states a contract performed without a required licence cannot be enforced in court โ€” meaning you cannot sue to collect, and in some jurisdictions the customer can recover what they already paid. This is the expensive version of getting it wrong.

Specialty trades are licensed separately

Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and sometimes roofing are usually licensed by their own boards with their own experience requirements, even in states with a single contractor board. Holding a general licence does not let you self-perform them.

Experience requirements are documented, not asserted

Boards want verifiable evidence โ€” employer affidavits, tax records, pay stubs. Start keeping that paperwork before you need it, because reconstructing four years of experience retroactively is painful.

Reciprocity is narrow and specific

Some states recognise licences from named states for named trades, often only at journeyman level and usually still requiring an application and a law exam. Never assume your licence travels.
