Your roadmap from skilled tradesperson to business owner

You already know the trade. This roadmap covers the business side — in the order it actually needs to happen.

The roadmap

8 steps to a legitimate, profitable contracting business

  1. Pick your niche and service area. Decide what work you'll do, for whom, and where. Specialists out-earn generalists and their marketing is far cheaper.
  2. Get licensed. Check your state and local licensing requirements for your trade. Working unlicensed caps your job size and can void contracts.
  3. Form your business and open a bank account. An LLC is the default choice for most contractors. Get an EIN and keep business money separate from day one.
  4. Get insured and bonded. General liability is non-negotiable; many states also require a bond and workers' comp. Commercial clients will ask for certificates.
  5. Set your pricing. Know your fully-loaded hourly cost, add overhead and profit, and stop guessing. Underpricing is the #1 killer of new contractors.
  6. Set up your minimum tech stack. A Google Business Profile, a simple website, and a way to estimate, invoice, and take payments. That's all you need to start.
  7. Land your first 10 customers. Referrals, neighborhood presence, and fast follow-up beat paid ads at this stage. Answer the phone — most competitors don't.
  8. Build the habit of reviews and repeatable process. Ask every happy customer for a Google review, and write down how you do each job so you can eventually delegate it.
