What ServiceM8 is

ServiceM8 is built around iPhone and iPad and charges by job volume rather than per user, which makes it unusually cheap for a small team with a lot of light users. The add-on model lets you switch on only the pieces you need, and the forms and checklists engine is genuinely good for trades with compliance paperwork. Long popular in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, with a growing North American base.

Best for

Small Apple-equipped teams with high user counts and modest job volume

Watch out

There is no full Android app for technicians, which rules it out for many crews, and heavy job volume makes the per-job pricing less attractive.

What it does well

  • Priced by jobs, not seats
  • Excellent custom forms and compliance checklists
  • Modular add-ons keep the base cheap
  • Strong offline behaviour on iOS

Integrates with

Xero ยท QuickBooks Online ยท Stripe ยท Zapier

Integration lists change often and "integrates" can mean anything from a real two-way sync to a one-way push through Zapier. Ask the vendor which fields move, in which direction, and how often.

Before you commit

  • Run one real job end to end during the trial โ€” quote, schedule, invoice, payment. Demos hide friction; a real job does not.
  • Check the mobile app on your own phone, outdoors, on cell data. That is where your crew will actually use it.
  • Confirm the accounting sync is two-way and that it maps to the way your bookkeeper already works.
  • Ask what happens to your data if you leave. Export formats matter more than you think on day 400.
  • Price it at the headcount you expect in 18 months, not today โ€” per-user pricing is where budgets break.

How to judge it in a trial

Run one real job through it end to end โ€” not the demo data. Quote it, schedule it, do it, invoice it, take the payment. Then ask the only question that matters on day 400: did the people who have to use this every day find it faster than what they do now? Friction you notice in week one compounds forever, and tool-hopping costs more than any feature gap.
